Square Enix have announced that new Tomb Raider game is currently in development at the studio and will be released on the next generation of consoles, the PS4 and Xbox One.

Darrell Gallagher, Head of Product Development and Studios, stated that “A next-generation sequel to Tomb Raider is in the works. We’re very excited to confirm that the team has started working on telling the next chapter in Lara’s tale. It’s still early days, so I’m afraid I can’t provide any further details for now save my assurance that we’re not resting on our laurels and acclaim from Tomb Raider’s recent successes, but working hard to raise the bar even higher and re-affirm the faith you’ve shown.”

The sequel was initially announced on a blog post from Square Enix CEO Phil Rogers yesterday which discussed the future plans of the company, including a new Tomb Raider game for the next generation of consoles. “Square Enix is in production with a number of next generation projects, including Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, which were announced at this year’s E3, and Thief coming in 2014,” Rogers wrote. “I am also excited to reveal that we are well into development on a next-generation Tomb Raider sequel.”

In regards to future Square Enix developments, Rogers stated that the future of Square Enix will “offer gamers more choice, support more platforms and try new things – but we will make sure that whatever the platform, we’ll always keep our focus on raising the quality bar. We feel that is what gamers should expect from a Square Enix game.” This is being actioned by a “senior team in the Americas and Europe to support our new and evolving strategy”.

Tomb Raider was released in March earlier this year to critical acclaim and was a reboot of the franchise that gave players the opportunity to play as a younger, more inexperienced Lara as she finds herself struggling for survival in an island-based origin story. Whilst joining Miss Croft on her journey around the crazy cult infested island in the Dragon’s Triangle, I couldn’t decide if Crystal Dynamics love Lara or absolutely loathe her. Whilst the devs have breathed new life into the character and the series, they seem to have included every opportunity to leave Lara battered and bruised.

Tomb Raider is out now for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. You can find out more about the game by reading our Tomb Raider Review: Worst Gap Year Ever.
